Beginner in fire arts

A safe way to get started

Congratulations on your desire to learn fire arts the right way! The GardeFeu protocol is the perfect way to learn a risk-reduction method.

The first step is to take the Fire Arts Safety 101 course, which is the common core for all artists working with GardeFeu, whether as a beginner, recreational or professional artist. The second step is to develop your skills through learning and practice.

Step 1 - Fire Arts Safety 101 Course

The very first step is to take and pass the Fire Arts Safety 101 Course based on the GardeFeu Protocol, which will teach you everything there is to know about safety in fire arts practice. This 3-hour theoretical and 1-hour practical course is given face-to-face. It includes a 15-question exam, with a pass mark of 80%.

Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for GardeFeu's free training and other fire-related activities, as well as certification for professionals.

There are two ways to take this course:

Via GardeFeu

We offer the course on our regular evenings. Please consult the calendar for dates and locations of upcoming courses. The regular price is $75. Classes are posted on GardeFeu Facebook events. These events are created about a week in advance, and are where we post start times and cancellations in case of inclement weather.

Via an authorized private instructor

Private instructors cover a vast territory, including Toronto, Montreal, Trois-Rivières and Quebec City. These instructors have more flexible schedules, better suited to industry professionals. Rates are at the instructor's discretion, and you should contact them directly. Please note that you will need to open a GardeFeu file at a cost of $35 before your course; your instructor will be able to assist you with this.

Step 2 - Training

The second step is to train in a safe environment. There are two types of training: free training with fire and workshops without fire.

The golden rule: when training with fire, only practice movements you've mastered 100% without fire.

No-fire workshop

These workshops are held just outside the fire zone. Instructors are professional artists who teach special equipment. It's a great way to learn new equipment. The cost is $20 for a 1-hour workshop, payable directly to the instructor. Not every evening has a workshop, so check Facebook events to find out if an evening has a workshop or not.

NOTE: Since there is no fire in the non-fire workshops, it is not mandatory to have taken the Fire Arts Safety 101 course to participate.

Self training with fire

These training sessions take place in the fire zone and apply everything you've learned in the safety course.

A few tips

  • Don't start out buying a lot of equipment. Start by discovering the community during free training evenings, asking questions and taking part in workshops when they're available, so you can familiarize yourself with different equipment and discover what you like.
  • Don't compare yourself to others - your relationship with fire is your own business, so respect your own pace of learning and comfort.
  • Don't hesitate to ask questions. The Fire Arts Safety 101 course will answer many of your questions, but if you have any others, go ahead! Talk to your free training supervisor or workshop instructor.
